Welcome to New Angeles

Commissioner Dawn lifted the sheet, glanced at the cooling corpse underneath, and then grimaced. It was just as the officer on the scene had said, and it meant a lot of paperwork and a lot of overtime for her detectives…

It is the future. Mankind has spread itself out across the solar system with varying degrees of success. The Moon and Mars are colonized. A plan to terraform Mars is well underway, hindered only by a civil war that has broken out on that planet. On Earth, a massive space elevator has been built, stretching up into the sky. It is the hub of trade in the solar system, and most people refer to it as the “Beanstalk.”

Computers have continued to advance, and that, combined with discoveries in the field of neurobiology, has led to brain-mapping, a method by which a human mind can be stored electronically. Recently, two rival companies used this development in different ways to create artificial, sentient life. Jinteki created human clones that can be  matured and educated in a fraction of the normal time. Haas-Bioroid, on the other hand, built robots with brainmapped, artificially intelligent  minds, calling them “bioroids.“ Naturally, this has caused no end of trouble.

With both companies selling their artificial humans, or androids, as cheap labor, thousands of already-impoverished humans have found themselves unemployed. This, combined with their deep  mistrust of scientists playing God, has led  many lower- and middle-class citizens to hate and fear the androids. A group calling itself Human First has sprung up, calling the androids “golems’“ – referring to the legendary soulless clay creatures. Human First has attacked the androids on numerous occasions, usually wielding sledgehammers as their weapon of choice, since the androids are often physically resilient.

In this hotbed of hatred, fear, and prejudice, the men and women of the New Angeles Police Department attempt to maintain order. Their job isn’t easy, since their charter requires them to patrol not only New Angeles but also the Heinlein moon colony located across the Beanstalk. Nevertheless, they continue to guard the thin blue line between civilization and anarchy.

The World Changed…

CyberSolutions, Inc. is on the brink of a new discovery in synthetic humanoids. If successful, they could threaten powerfull megacorps Haas-Bioroid and Jinteki, who have a stranglehold on the artificial labor market. Unfortunately for CyberSolutions, Inc., their New Angeles branch office has been compromised.

A career criminal known only as “Mr. White” has gathered together a gang of thieves to infiltrate the CyberSolutions, Inc. facility. The  heavily guarded building will prove difficult to enter and navigate, but the valuable research data makes this heist worth the risk.

Mr. White’s personal contract with a certain megacorporation makes the job even more profitable for him. Unfortunately for Mr. White, he’s not the only one on his team with a personal agenda.

Now the infiltration is underway and there is no honor among thieves. With the first layer of security bypassed, Mr. White’s group splits up. The alarms have been triggered, private security mercs are on their  way, and it’s every man, woman, and bioroid for themselves. Who will escape with the most data? And who  will be left behind to take the fall?

Android: Netrunner is a two-player Living Card Game™ set in a dystopian, cyberpunk future where monolithic megacorps own and control the vast majority of human interests. While corporation players try to score points by advancing their agendas, they have to guard their intellectual properties from the elite and subversive hackers known as netrunners.

New World Order

Technological advances have allowed corporations to push the envelope of human experience to heights previously unimaginable. Mankind has colonized the Moon and Mars. Powerful computer and neurobiological technologies have allowed scientists to create digital maps of the mind, empowering new artificial intelligences and electronic brain interfaces. Gone are the days of the mouse and the keyboard. Most users transfer data via gestural interfaces and virt displays, but the elite “jack-in,” connecting their brains directly to their computers and, beyond them, the omnipresent network.

Everyone relies on the network, the all-seeing, all-hearing grid that surrounds Earth and reaches out into the solar system. More data flows through the network every second than was ever expressed in the first five-thousand years of written language. It is a surveillance network, a financial system, and a library. It is the backbone of modern civilization. It is also the greatest weakness the megacorps have.

There are those who hunt constantly for flaws in corporate security measures. They hunt for different purposes. Some hope to expose the root hypocrisy of these business giants built upon the labor of mistreated and impoverished drones and held in place by fraudulently legitimized monopolies. Some want to explode the walls that hide corporate secrets and usher in a new age of free information. And others merely want to make some quick credits, hacking for secrets and turning them around on the black market. These rogue operators with the hardware, software, and raw talent to exploit the corporations greatest weaknesses are the individualists known as netrunners.

The Future Is Now

When Netrunner was originally released in 1996, it was widely hailed as one of the greatest customizable card games of that era. Now, Fantasy Flight Games has updated this classic card game by Richard Garfield to fit our Living Card Game™ model.

Players familiar with the original will recognize its gritty, noir, cyberpunk feel and the tense, strategic action engendered by balancing their actions, but they’ll also find plenty of exciting enhancements in Android: Netrunner. Several of the more troublesome mechanics are being cleaned up and clarified, and the introduction of identities into the card pool creates a more dynamic play environment. Meanwhile, as the newest of our LCGs, Android: Netrunner will have a fixed distribution model that allows the game to grow organically with the cards from each regular release.

Asymmetrical Game Play

In Android: Netrunner, each player starts with five credits, five cards in hand, and a set number of actions per turn. Each player seeks to score seven points from agendas, but from there the corporation and runner verge in two wildly different and wholly flavorful directions.

Corporations seek to score agendas by advancing them. Doing so takes time and credits. To buy the time and earn the credits they need, they must secure their servers and data forts with “ice.” These security programs come in different varieties, from simple barriers, to code gates and aggressive sentries. They serve as the corporation’s virtual eyes, ears, and machine guns on the sprawling information superhighways of the network.

In turn, runners need to spend their time and credits acquiring a sufficient wealth of resources, purchasing the necessary hardware, and developing suitably powerful ice-breaker programs to hack past corporate security measures. Their jobs are always a little desperate, driven by tight timelines, and shrouded in mystery. When a runner jacks-in and starts a run at a corporate server, he risks having his best programs trashed or being caught by a trace program and left vulnerable to corporate countermeasures. It’s not uncommon for an unprepared runner to fail to bypass a nasty sentry and suffer massive brain damage as a result. Even if a runner gets through a data fort’s defenses, there’s no telling what it holds. Sometimes, the runner finds something of value. Sometimes, the best he can do is work to trash whatever the corporation was developing.

Players in Android: Netrunner find themselves in a game of ever-building tension. The corporation’s every step is an investment in the grand scheme, but can they protect their assets from the runner’s ingenuity? And while a runner presses to prevent the corporation from achieving its goals, he must decide whether he can afford to run blind. Will the next piece of ice be the one that renders him comatose? Will the corporation finally tag him and send a hit man his way? Will he steal the corporation’s most valuable secrets, or will he stumble into an explosive trap?

Corporate Giants and Smooth Criminals

The Core Set for Android: Netrunner introduces seven identity cards, which represent different corporations and runner classes. Each plays according to its own, distinctive style.

Amid the future’s breath-taking developments, four giant corporations tower above the rest as paragons of industry.

Haas-Bioroid leads the work replacement revolution with its bioroids, humanoid machines possessing artificially-intelligent minds developed from careful braintaping.
Jinteki are their main rival in the labor solutions market. Jinteki excel at producing genetically-engineered clones, some of which are even capable of working in the vacuum at the top of the Beanstalk.
NBN owns what you think and dream, with the largest and most pervasive media network ever conceived by man streaming everything from music to threedee, news to sitcoms, and classic movies to sensies.
The Weyland Consortium has expanded since its construction of the space elevator; the Consortium now leads the way in construction of cutting edge facilities on Earth, the Moon, and Mars.
Conversely, netrunners are identified by their motives more than by their achievements. They don’t build up. They tear open.

Anarchs like Noise Reilly work from their hatred for corporate corruption. Some might say they champion the oppressed and the downtrodden, but it’s more likely that they’re interested purely in the act of ripping apart corporate lies and spreading their viruses to hinder the corporate machine.
Criminals like Gabriel Santiago are in it for the credits. They get paid for the secrets they uncover. Consummate professionals, these runners believe in taking as few risks as possible, and never the ones they consider unnecessary.
Shapers like Kate McCaffrey are considered idealistic naifs by many. They’re not in the business to tear down corporations nor for personal gain. They run because they can. They take joy runs to see what they can make out of new combinations of hardware and software. Accordingly, their tech is usually among the most modded and sophisticated of any runner’s.


Humanity hurtles into space and lives on the network. With its seven identities and 252 cards, the Android: Netrunner Core Set provides everything you need to immerse yourselves in the cyberpunk fantasy of a world filled with valuable data and high-stakes runs through the network, and data constructs as varied as the human imagination.

They’re built on credits, lies, and the blood and sweat of the little guys who can’t stand up for themselves. They will kill whomever they need, whenever they can, to keep their messaging strong and clear, broadcasting from Broadcast Square to outer space. You want the truth? Talk to a runner. They call us criminals, sure, but that’s just because megacorps don’t live by laws; they make them. They make reality. But whatever they think they can make, I can tear it down. There’s only one real truth. The network is everywhere. Everything is on the net. Your banking, your purchase history, your favorite shows, your dirty laundry. You dig deep enough, you run fast enough, you can find anything, and be anyone…

Breaking the Ice
The asymmetrical game play of Android: Netrunner creates entirely different experiences for corporations and runners, but in all cases, players gain an unprecedented amount of control over the flow of the game. Tension builds immediately from the very outset as both players consider how to maneuver through their actions each turn. Bluffs, calculated risks, and assumed losses all play into your decision-making as you must forge quickly ahead with limited and imperfect knowledge.


Furthermore, players can explore the flavorful distinctions between the game’s four corporations (Haas-Bioroid,Jinteki, The Weyland Consortium, and NBN) and its three runner classes (Anarch, Criminal, and Shaper). Each of these seven factions offers a distinctive personality, further rooting it in the Android universe and enriching the game’s variety.

WINTERDAWN a Netrunner virtual expansion, by The AI, Beats, Rabbi Small, Tinweasel and Whirlybird Gameboy.

The Main Characters
Terrel LaCroix-Head of GenTech International, a Biotech Research Multinational specializing in genetics-anything from super-corn (mundane) to genetically engineered babys (limited in scope, but trendy among the really rich). 
Dr. Angus MacMillan-Former Head of Research at GenTech International. 
Dr. Sven Johanssen-Present Head of Research at GenTech International. 
Nero Yakata-former GTI Head of Black Ops. 
Zinger-Electronics Genius and passable Runner. Designer of Meltdown™ 
‘Tabloid’ Tommy Turnbull-A hard-nosed journalist, who will break any story, anywhere, as long as his name goes on it.

The Lowdown

      Dr. MacMillan, a Scot,  a noted geneticist, who along with heading up the Research facility at GTI, was the point man for Winterdawn, a project that through fetal gene manipulation improved the quality of life for the children of those who could afford the treatment by ‘de-commissioning’ genes responsible for birth defects and disease. Phase two was of the plan was two-fold. First, it involved mass-producing and mass-marketing Winterdawn in order to drive the price down far enough that the common man could afford the treatment. Secondly, research was increased with the aim of developing a process whereupon gene treatments could be injected into already sick or dying people in order to ‘de-commission’ those genes causing the illness. Unbeknownst to MacMillan however, much of the money invested in Winterdawn was actually being diverted into a second project headed up by Dr. Johanssen, Winterstorm. Johanssen’s work involved cloning and the person to be unknowingly duplicated was to be GTI’s Head of Security, Nero Yakata. 
     Now MacMillan has found out, and whats worse, Terrel LaCroix, President of GTI, knows that MacMillan is aware of his plans and wants him dead. The doctor, his support system cut out from under him in one fell swoop, turns to the person who stands to lose the most should the research be completed and the plan come to fruition, Yakata. 
     Their access to the computer banks cut-off, the two men seek out the Techie ‘Zinger’ and the Media ‘Tabloid’ Tommy Turnbull in order to use GTI’s weapons against it so that they might liberate the research and expose GTI for the fraud it is before it’s too late.

Below is a complete and updated review of Winterdawn, a virtual expansion made by a group of famous players, fan of this game. I took my first notes and comments I made long ago and used them as a starting point to make a full in-depth analysis of this expansion, taking into account the cards from Classic and last developments in Netrunner. I apologize in advance for any comment that could be perceived as blunt or severe, as my intent is not to criticize to destroy but only to help to improve, and I respect profoundly the
creator’s work.

The purpose of this article is not only to write a pure comment of the set, but also to “fine tune” it to correct all wording and balance problems. For the sake of clarity I set a version number to the original set: v2.26. The full corrected set is then v2.26b. I assumed that after the last official set of cards (Classic v2.2), all major existing virtual expansions would have a version number beginning with v2.2 with an additional
letter for corrected version (except Chrysalid Matrix which had already been numbered as v1.1e). Thus Rogues would be v2.21, Dangerous Allies v2.22, RIP v2.24, and then Winterdawn v2.26 (my 5 expansions are already numbered: Open War is v2.3A, Deep Runs is v2.3B, Cybertech is v2.4, Net Links is v2.5A, Hard Code is v2.5B). [Editor's Note: This numbering's will also be reflected on our Card Sets tab in a near update - Ophidian Lord]

For balance problems, some cards are remarkably broken, and corrections have been necessary to make them playable and prevent them from being simply banned. I know, that for some cards, I’ve taken what could be considered a “personal” option, but I’ve tried to keep as much as possible the original design of each card, and I corrected them only when it was really necessary). I personally consider the v2.26b as the full, finalized, and officially playable Winterdawn set.

I’ve also transformed the set into a full graphical one, and all the cards are presented now in the Netrunner layout and are fully illustrated. The process required a huge work, but I think the result is worth it, and it was anyway an old dream I had for this expansion. This is a way to pay tribute to Netrunner and to reward the
creators’ efforts to keep this game alive.

But we have more, as the rice on our cake we're updating the Online tab with more informative stuff (thanks to the info we borrowed/stole from our sister site Your Mole).
